Twenty years into their career, The Devil Wears Prada are finally doing what they never got to do in Europe: headline. The Flowers tour stopped at a packed Effenaar on Saturday night, October 10 and with three support acts covering hardcore, metalcore and prog-tinged heaviness, it turned into a full evening of everything the scene does well. Oversize
Oversize had the thankless job of opening while the room was still filling up, but they played like it was a headline slot. Short, sharp and heavy, their set set the tone for the night and got the early arrivals moving. A band that clearly earned more than a handful of new fans before most people had finished their first beer.

156/Silence
The Pittsburgh crew turned the energy up several notches. Opening with “Control Burns” and running through “No Arms” and “Proxy Idols,” 156/Silence delivered a set that was chaotic in the best possible way: dissonant, unpredictable and relentlessly heavy. “Better Written Villain” was a standout, and closer “Character Development (Cold Start)” left the pit visibly wrecked. If you walked in not knowing them, you walked out with a name to look up.

Novelists
The French outfit brought a different flavour: technical, melodic and polished to a shine. “All For Nothing” and “Prisoner” kicked things off with precision riffing and soaring choruses, while “Mourning the Dawn” and “Coda” showed just how much range this band has. Closing with “Turn It Up (Keyboard Warriors Social Club)” was a smart move, ending on a groove that had the entire floor bouncing. Novelists are more than ready for bigger stages.

The Devil Wears Prada
Then the headliners. Opening with “Where the Flowers Never Grow” made the intent clear: this tour is about the new record, and TDWP are confident enough in it to lead with it. “So Low” and “Danger: Wildman” followed in quick succession, and from there the band balanced old and new with real care. “Watchtower” and “Salt” hit as hard as ever, “Broken” and “Ritual” kept the singalongs going, and “Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over” was a welcome throwback for the long-time fans in the room.

Mike Hranica remains one of the most physical frontmen in metalcore, and the interplay with Jeremy DePoyster’s clean vocals is still the band’s secret weapon. The back half of the set was a run of fan favourites: “Kansas,” “Dez Moines,” “Chemical” and “Sacrifice” turned the Effenaar into one big circle pit.
The encore was pure fan service with a wink. “Play The Old Shit,” the vinyl-only secret track off Flowers, is exactly what the title promises, and it rolled straight into the inevitable “Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?” to close the night. You could not script a better ending for a band celebrating its past while proving it still has plenty left to say.

Verdict
A stacked bill, a band at the top of their game and a setlist that respected every era. The Devil Wears Prada waited a long time for a European headline run. On this evidence, it will not be their last.
