The Dutch post-punk/rock band ‘Sparrow Falls‘ play like they say “a unique blend of raw, honest punk rock, dramatic rock and 80ties hard rock with a pinch of country, folk and Americana.” On April 24th 2015 they release their new album ‘A Brimstone Harvest’, with 10 brand new songs! PitKings received this album already and Anton wrote a review about it.
The history of Sparrow Falls
Sparrow Falls was formed in Maastricht in 2005 by vocalist Merijn Verhees and guitarist Ed van Hees. In 2010 they released their debut album ‘Tides’ and in 2013 the launched their EP ‘Maelstrom’ at Suburban Records. On Februari 27 they released their first single ‘Shipburner’ from their new album ‘A Brimstone Harvest’, which will be released at April 24th 2015.
A Brimstone Harvest: a lot to discover
There were two things that I first noticed when I listened to the album in the train. The first thing was “what a very good recording sound” and the second was “this album is not getting bored at all”! There are constantly new musical things to discover in every song and the songs are build up in multiple layers. That’s also the reason for the good, professional sound that gives the album the body and vibe that tells you a kind of ‘working class’ story in their music. The influences I hear in the music from Sparrow Falls is a blend from Rancid, Foo Fighters, Social Distortion, Dropkick Murphys and the typical twin guitar solos from Thin Lizzy.
You can also hear that these guys experienced a lot with all kinds of music and that they played a lot of gigs. The songs are refreshing an and you have to listen a few times to this album to hear all differences between the songs. Thats a positive note, because otherwise an album is to fast to boring. ‘A Brimstne Harvest’ is having it all and it’s hard to find negative points about this album. I think it’s not weird when I say that this is by far the best weapon Sparrow Falls made in 10 years time. Cheers!
