I Chaos | Masterbleeder (album review) ★★★☆☆

The Dutch death metal band I Chaos released their second full-length album ‘Masterbleeder‘ on the 25th of September 2015. The band discribes the album as “A concept album dealing with a lost soul entering the treacherous world of psychiatry and learning about the daily oppression and mental incarceration of millions of people.” Well, nice information, but let’s find out how it sounds.

The album starts with the song ‘Waking Hell’. A hard and fast opener filled with in your face blasts beats, heavy riffs and in the end some room for slower melodic parts and solos. A wall of sound is pumped into your room. No excuses, just loud and packed with fat sounding guitars. Also the drums is having an important role on this album, with the almighty Koen Herfst. He keeps the guitars and vocals together and makes this album sound as one oiled machine. The vocals are adding the aggressive part to the music and turn the songs into real uncompromising death metal.

And when you think you can expect a slow song, just forget it. Some songs maybe start slow, every song turn into a war of brutal music. Only the last song ‘The End Of A Lie’ is a slower song. See it as a four minute outro to end the album with. A moment of rest, which I would rather see halfway the album.

Is Masterbleeder a masterpiece? No, but they are on their way. The sound and the enthusiasm they play with is good, but the problem is that the album is a little bit the same after ten songs. The same trick without real surprises, like a piano or I don’t know what. Now it’s one straight away sounding album and that’s pity, because now there’s not much difference between I Chaos and other death metal bands. On the other hand, for the real death metal lovers that’s certainly no problem. They just have to check this CD and won’t be disappointed.
