GEOFF TATE – Bolwerk, Sneek | 2025

February 9, 2025 – On a chilly February evening, rock enthusiasts gathered at Bolwerk in Sneek to witness a legend in action. Geoff Tate, the iconic voice of Queensrÿche, brought his The Big Rock Show Tour to the Netherlands, and expectations were high. The venue was well-filled, primarily with an older audience who had clearly followed Tate’s career since the glory days of progressive metal.

From the moment the first chords of Empire rang through the hall, it was evident that this was going to be a night to remember. The sound quality was impeccable—crystal clear, perfectly balanced, and at just the right volume to deliver an immersive experience without overwhelming the senses. The band accompanying Tate was nothing short of phenomenal, effortlessly recreating the complex and dynamic compositions that Queensrÿche is known for. The musicians displayed not only technical prowess but also remarkable chemistry, delivering an energetic performance that kept the audience engaged throughout the night.

Geoff Tate himself was in stellar form. At 65, he still possesses the remarkable vocal range that made him famous, effortlessly hitting the soaring high notes in classics like Take Hold of the Flame and Queen of the Reich. His voice carried both power and emotion, particularly shining in ballads such as Silent Lucidity, which had the crowd swaying in a nostalgic trance.

The setlist was a well-curated journey through Queensrÿche’s catalog, featuring a mix of their biggest hits and deep cuts. Songs like Operation: Mindcrime and Breaking the Silence transported the audience back to the band’s peak era, while NM156 and Screaming in Digital showcased the band’s more experimental side. The energy in the room reached its peak with Jet City Woman and Walk in the Shadows, prompting enthusiastic singalongs from the audience.

The encore was a treat, starting with a surprise cover of Pink Floyd’s Welcome to the Machine, a fitting choice that highlighted Tate’s ability to interpret classic material with his signature touch. The night concluded with the explosive Take Hold of the Flame and the fan-favorite Queen of the Reich, ensuring that the audience left on a high note.

Overall, this was a masterclass in live rock performance. Geoff Tate and his band demonstrated not only technical excellence but also a genuine passion for the music, making it a truly memorable night for all in attendance.
